The Waves have been pumping for the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks today and predicted to increase in size for tomorrow!
Two-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore from Coolangatta Aus, commenced her 2009 season with a win over Hawaiis Melanie Bartels at the Roxy Pro in 1.5 (3-4ft) metre waves Yesterday.
A 9.57 ride inside the first minute proved the difference for Gilmore who was able to hold out a last-minute charge by Bartels. Great start for her coming into the first event of the session.
A HUGE UPSET YESTERDAY, THE BIGGEST ONE OF THE EVENT saw wildcard, local boy Julian Wilson, aged 20, eliminate reigning nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater from the competition!!
After conducting an interview with Julian Wilson he said. Im over the moon right now, Wilson said, I was so nervous before that heat just thinking about what I could do to beat Kelly. For so long, he has been unstoppable. I started the heat on the inside and got the first wave, which is what I wanted to do. It feels so good to beat him.
Unfortunately the waves just werent there for Kelly in the heat, but its not all over! Hell come back and show everyone what hes made of!!
