RIP CURL SUNSET OPEN 2024 WITH OFFICIAL TIMEKEEPER BREITLING
And just like that the Rip Curl Sunset Open is right around the corner once again.
We’ve had a slightly late start to the winter surf season but there’s been a good amount of swell filling in since the start of 2024 and we’ve got some more on the way soon! This has us stoked for the promising peak season months of Feb and March, right in the middle of our event waiting period.
As we’ve kept up since the very beginning, each year returns with an evolved and bigger event. More prizes, more action, and a community that’s bigger every single year! Can’t wait to call the event on once we’ve seen the forecast line up and we make our way down to the epic stretch of beach that is the Umm Al Quwain Kite Beach Center. We’ve got all 7 division back for another year and look forward to a packed out weekend of competition! We'll keep you posted with all event updates on all our usual online channels. Follow us @surfhousedubai
——
The history of the Sunset Open began in 2010. A surfing event held once a year with 3 reasons in mind:
1. To showcase local Emirati and expatriate surfing talent from the region.
2. To bring together the world class ocean and beach communities in the UAE.
3. To celebrate the sport of surfing (in multiple forms of wave riding) and bring more awareness to the beaches and ocean environment of the UAE.
It has always been held during the UAE’s most wave rich calendar months of February to March with a 5 week waiting period to give us the chance of picking the best weekend of swell in that time frame. Falling in the back half of the winter seasons also allows surfers to have the first portion of winter to shake off summer cobwebs and refine their surfing.
The very first Sunset Open was unsurprisingly held on Dubai’s Sunset Beach. Half a dozen picnic gazebos, a dozen outdoor garden chairs and 20 community volunteers helped put on the events first iteration and instantly became a calendar highlight of the year. It is an event that embodies the spirit of the UAE’s surf culture. Fun waves, good vibes, a close community of familiar faces and a stoke for riding waves on par with the most revered surfing hubs around the globe.
The event has grown leaps and bounds in its national support, production and participation since 2010 (now 100+ competitors across all divisions), and we look forward to its inaugural hosting at the Umm Al Quwain Kite Beach Centre the second time in a row for this year in 2023.

The 11th Paddle Around the World Islands is finally here and happening! The UAE's Largest Paddle event is back for the 11th time running. With over 80 paddlers earlier this year for the Ripples of Hope, we managed to raise a substantial amount of funds for SOS Children's Villages and hit the target of AED10,000+. Though we've already reached our targets for the fund, we mean to double it with this upcoming and most anticipated event by the SUP community. A total of 32 kilometres of open ocean paddling with the opportunity to get close and personal with the Nakheel World Islands. This event is not a race, meaning you can go at your own pace, but it is a challenge. This is NOT a paddle for Beginners. We require a confident level of Paddling. Click here for registration.

The Paddle Out for COP28 is a peaceful campaign for Ocean Health + Human Health.
A symbolic community gathering in the ocean, uniting surfers, SUPers, divers, ocean lovers and ocean stewards to raise awareness for ocean conservation during the biggest event for climate change in the world: COP28.
Believed to have begun as an ancient Hawaiian tradition, a paddle out is a ceremony typically used to celebrate and pay tribute to surfers who have passed away. Paddle outs have evolved beyond the concept of memorials and are now a way of honouring or paying tribute to other causes related to the ocean.
This Paddle Out is an activity where attendees will paddle from the beach out to the sea, following a route of 2km, where they will form a circle and pay tribute to the ocean.
Paddlers can use SUP (stand up paddle boards), surf boards, kayaks, dragon boats, or other water vessels.
We are forming a circle in the ocean where we will link together, and set our intentions for a better world, improving ocean conservation, and reflecting on how the ocean can help our mental health.
Paddlers can arrive at 7am and no later than 8am. Attendees visiting the Blue Mind Zone or spectating, can arrive anytime between 7am - 11.30am.
Paddle start time is 8.30am when we will have briefings, photos and our launch.
And....entry into our prize draw!
All ticket holders are automatically entered into our prize draw! Prizes include: Home Water Filter by Liquid of Life Tent by WâHat Eco-Heroes books by Colette Barr Sustainable Toys by Rikbits
]]>In the heart of Indonesia's diverse surf breaks, nestled in the longboarders paradise of Lombok, two passionate surfers began a movement sparked from a simple idea.
Dana (Dancelightly) has been a familiar face on these shores for many years, fully immersed in the local community. It’s from Lombok that she organizes and hosts surf retreats and it's from here with her connections to the community that she began developing ways to give back the locals that had welcomed her with open arms.
Alongside her, Emma, the creative force behind Noserider Surf Club. Another frequenter of Lombok’s glassy waves, Emma began designing eco-friendly surf suits for women in response to the plastic pollution prevalent in places like Bali.Since Noserider’s inception, Emma has consistently sought ways to support Lombok's community, a commitment evident in the incorporation of puka shell bracelets crafted by local Lombok girls. These bracelets directly contribute to the school fees of these talented girls, symbolizing Emma's dedication to empowering the local youth to pursue education.
Together their shared love for the environment and riding waves led to giving back to the very community that helped nature their passion.
The idea was surprisingly simple: selling one of a kind surf fins. The unique fins made by a local carver, each featured Batik print patterns from local sarongs and proved immensely popular with the girls collective audience. By channeling all profits and donations directly to the people of Rebuk, the girls aim to not only provide sustainable resources but also address urgent needs within the community.
In recent times, the rising cost of rice has left many families in Rebuk struggling to afford basic necessities. In response, the girls redirected some of their relief efforts, using donations to purchase large sacks of rice.
This rice became a lifeline for the village, helping feed families that would have otherwise gone without due to the economic challenges they faced. One of the distinctive features of this initiative lies in its ability to blend environmental consciousness with community support.
There are several ways to get involved with this impactful movement. Purchasing one of these decorative fins or making a donation, contributes to the purchase of essential resources for the Lombok community. As the waves continue to crash along the shores of Lombok, DanceLightly, Noserider Surf Club, and their supporters stand as a testament to the transformative power of a simple idea. Together they have created ripples of change that extend far beyond the shore.]]>Single Fin Dubai’s Great Traveler/Diner Reviews Earn it a Place Among Travelers’ Favorites
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 27 September, 2023 – Single Fin Dubai cafe today announced it has been recognized by Tripadvisor as a 2023 Travelers’ Choice award winner. The coveted award celebrates businesses that have consistently received great traveler reviews on Tripadvisor over the last 12 months, placing these winners among the 10% of all listings on Tripadvisor globally.
"We were always hungry.
When healthy food wasn’t within arms reach, that’s when the subtle panic would start to set in.
Our business was active, early starts, applying what we had physically and mentally to all that we were building. Fueling busy long days was always going to be important.
We didn’t know much about the restaurant business, or building a kitchen, but the idea of delicious and healthy food readily available in-house made a very strong case for us to explore further.
A loyal member of the Surf House and community (Nasser Osseiran), was a passionate chef who was becoming a keen surfer and waterman. He was talented and spoke about cooking with a similar fervor to when we spoke about surfing.
We sat and brainstormed all the things we wanted – a shopping list for exactly what would tick all the boxes, essentially our bespoke vision of an in-house f&b element to the business.
It had to be true to who we were, tied to our roots and weaved into the fabric of our brand. We wanted to create a menu inspired by dishes served around the World in the most iconic surfing destinations. Meals that had become synonymous with the surf lifestyle in places like Hawaii, Brazil, Australia. This gave us an immense diversity of flavours and ingredients to work with, all tied by a few common threads – great quality produce, nutritious, and delicious (healthy servings go without saying to satiate any surfer post 2 hour morning session).
Single Fin was born in early 2017 with a mission to serve our local community with a healthy, scrumptious post surf bite at an honest price. 7 years later, we’re honoured to have such a diverse, loyal and ever-growing community base. Whilst we’ve served tens of thousands of our signature Mavericks Açai bowls, we’re pretty different to most restaurant business, as we don’t really have many ‘customers’ – we just have a whole lot of friends and family of the house. Thanks to everyone for all the years great chats over flat whites – you are what makes our beachside sanctuary and you are what keep us excited to keep creating." - Scott Chambers, CEO

When STAB posted an article, ’Should the UAE buy the WSL', it naturally had us intrigued. The article that followed spoke on the opening of a KS Wave Pool in the region, to be 'Surf Abu Dhabi' - Big news on home turf.
After the first IG post on the Surf Abu Dhabi announcement, we couldn’t help dive into some of the comments. Amongst the dialogue on the post, there are wild and fascinating opinions being dropped in response to the new wave pool being built in a 'non-surf' part of the World.
'Non-surf' part of the World is maybe a forgivable mislabelling for the uninitiated but always does give us a smuggish chuckle. We held ourselves back from getting into it on the comments, but couldn’t help feeling a sense of responsibility to shed a bit of light on the subject, so we ended up writing something. Not sure if it would ever find a home or reach an audience interested to read it and surprising enlightenment it may have brought- it just felt good to do, even if for our own personal cathartics.
We eventually figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to leave it with the editors at Stab. Long time fans of their work, we felt pretty happy it would be in good hands. Fortunately they were interested and reached out straight away, open ears and brimming with curiosity to find out more. We had a good chat with them and the article followed. For more of the backstory, here's our original letter below:
———
"Chiming in to add a bit of background, fill in some context and hopefully shed a bit more light on the recent news of the Kelly Slater Wave pool being opened in Abu Dhabi, the neighbouring Emirate to Dubai and capital city of the United Arab Emirates (a separate country to Saudi Arabia - just to clarify given the apparent online confusion).
We were born in the UAE and have been surfing its local beaches here since the early 90’s. That was a time of no more than a handful of surfers contented to enjoy warm water uncrowded beach breaks 90 days of the year.
The UAE sits in the fortuitous south eastern corner of the Arabian Gulf, allowing it to collect the best wind swell generated by winter low pressure fronts. The wave climate in the region is akin to the Gulf of Mexico with the UAE being a Middle Eastern Florida. Not quite World Class, but waves none the less, which is more than most would assume having not seen it themselves.
We were also fortunate to have an environment were we could funnel our love for surfing into building a community business (Surf House Dubai) that would introduce others to the sport and lifestyle we cherished, even more so into our adult lives. This was a lifestyle probably far less synonymous with Dubai’s grander global image - a futuristic fast paced city steeped in opulence, where wealth is seemingly endless and Ferrari’s are commonplace. But that was ok, because it was true to us and we were happy to add another layer to the fabric of Dubai and country we called home.
For those unfamiliar with Dubai and the UAE in general, it may or may not come as a surprise but this is a region of the world that has cracked the code on something many others still wrestle with. The UAE has created a cosmopolitan haven where hundreds of different nationalities, cultures, and ethnicities harmoniously thrive in one place. Contrary to obscure ideas that seemingly still exist, women are incredibly well respected and as all citizens, comforted by the fact that they are living in one of the safest places in the world. There are zero gender biases or limitations with regards to work or recreation. By bolstering a sense of unconditional tolerance, what you’ll pick up on when living here is that not only does everyone feel welcomed and acknowledged, but the UAE is a country that’s understood how to allow its unique multinational alchemy to breed creativity and to further the country from strength to strength. This comes from a progressive and ambitious approach to leadership. A state of the art wave pool for region where surfing was only meaningfully introduced 18yrs ago is case in point.
We were never short of steam to keep building, as year on year, we met more and more people (from local Emiratis, to expat residents and visiting tourists) either ecstatic with the joy of finding surfing for the first time or people that moved here thinking their surf lives were over, and we could be the cheerful bearer of great news - ‘yeah you can surf in the UAE’.
In 2009 we ran into a minor hurdle, when surfing was banned on one of the best public surfing beaches. This stemmed from the coastal authorities perceiving a danger from people swimming in the same waters as surfers with pointy nosed equipment and sharp fins. Keep in mind the UAE is a country that’s only 52yrs old with no historic ties or exposure to anything like surfing. We were able to engage a dialogue and exchange ideas on beach management for safe coexistence of both sports that lifeguards could help facilitate (think flag systems you have in places like Australia, Europe and the US) and within a couple months there was a permanent sign posted dedicated surfing zone on the same beach. This is another example of how the UAE is a young country that may not have figured everything out but is willing to learn, adopt best practice and some instances innovate to create best in class.
Often called one of the cities institutions, 18yrs in, Surf House Dubai is a congregation of people from all over the world that love the ocean, love surfing and have connected with a style of life agnostic to any country but common to most coastlines.
What’s really impressive is despite the lack of regular good surf, the stoke and enthusiasm of Emirati’s and resident surfers is second to none. What we would call World class, and in that sense, quite fitting with Dubai’s affinity for ‘only the best’.
Needless to say, a UAE surfer is always welcoming to the opportunity of more and/or better surf any chance they can get. So a facility able to produce World Class waves, in a somewhat wave starved corner of the globe with a passionate and thriving surf community, makes a fair amount of sense for a number of reasons.
Outside of the (several thousand strong) residential surfing population in the UAE, Dubai happens to be the busiest airport in the world with over 66million passengers annually. This isn’t surprising being geographic positioned quite literally in the middle of the globe, linking east with west. A quick look at the well trodden seasonal migratory paths for surfers and you’ll soon see how regularly the UAE appears on the flight path. Europe to Indonesia and Australia for starters. Having the optionality to stop over for a couple of days and surf a pool in the Middle East is likely an attractive pit stop to a London based desk jockey about to lay on his wax for the first time all year paddling out to a crowded Uluwatu line up. Dusting off the cob webs and finding one’s sea legs prior reuniting with real Indian Ocean power is an obvious bonus. But this also means, a European office man, gets a novel experience (which as a surfer is most likely on the list for something you’d hope to try at some stage) without having to burn through any more carbon credits than you already will be in your standard summer surf holiday. No extra A380, just a pit stop in passing.
The UAE has battled with diabetes Type 2 for quite some time. Child obesity often being linked to this condition. With a limited number of ‘surfable’ days per year, we’ve always endeavoured to put a small dent in this issue by helping kids find surfing and the healthy shift in lifestyle that normally goes hand in hand with ‘catching the bug’. Given the immense amount of fun kids generally have in riding waves, we can only imagine the magnitude and speed at which local youth uptake the sport and the positive knock on effects that has.
We’ve always been of the thinking that surfing is one of the most fun things a human can do on earth. In an ideal world, (as are most of the primary simple pleasures in life) what everyone should be able to sample at least once to see what they make of it. As we have found ourselves, riding your first wave, is an experience capable of shaping our paths through choice and perspective. Whether that’s deciding you’re going to relocate your family to a coast with better surf, changing the industries you work in, or for an 8 year old born in the Middle East that decides they want to be the first professional surfer to represent their country at the Olympics. We live in a globalised world, everyone has a right to ride a wave, no matter where you live, where you come from or what other opinions people have.
If nothing else, hope the above may have been a useful bit of info/insight.
Thanks guys. Have a good one."

"Ang Dagat Ang Pinagmulan" by Mike Elijansantos of My Life On Board (IG: @mylifeonboard)
How does a tourism-reliant community survive during lockdown? In San Juan, La Union, a family goes back to their roots: fishing. Set in the surfing capital of the Northern Philippines, “Ang Dagat Ang Pinagmulan” centers on the people and the municipality of San Juan - its history as a fishing village before becoming a tourism hotspot. It tackles not only the shift in the residents’ livelihood when surfing became prominent in the area, but also the changes in its water ecosystem. While exploring the effect of dormant tourism during the pandemic in both the community and the environment, the documentary presses a very important question: Is it possible for both booming tourism and thriving nature to co-exist at the same time?
Featuring the Jomarie Ebueza, Philippines' current ranked number 1 surf athlete for longboarding.

The year 2010 saw the birth of the brand Bahara Surfboards. It was Paul Abbas' desire to learn how to surf in a country which lacked surfboards, thus beginning the shaping
of his primary and first board. One board led to another and not long after grew a passion and addiction for the craft.
Humbled by the support of those around him, and through his dedication, Paul went against all odds and became the first Professional surfboard shaper in Lebanon and the region to date. Check his works when he does final stages for the custom boards he's shaping for the event.
Omar Greg is a surfer, painter and architect. Growing up in Anfeh, a charming little town Northern coast of Lebanon, Omar was
connected with the water since childhood. Surf culture is poignant in Omar's aesthetics with the use of vibrant colors & bold forms. Experience his talents this November when he paints on the finished board by Bahara Surfboards.
WHAT IS LOFF ABOUT
Lebanese Outdoors Film Festival is the very first official outdoor sports film festival in Lebanon and the Arab world. Founded in 2020 by a team of adventure and film enthusiasts.

LOFF has curated a series of Lebanese surf films created by their community and will be shown during the last evening of the event.
]]>Max has always been drawn to water. Constantly swimming and backflipping into pools as a child; growing up around rivers, lakes and by the sea in Cornwall, UK; Max has always felt at home around water, experiencing a profound sense of calm.
Max has lived and traveled all over the world. Being here in Dubai by the Gulf for the past 7 years; exploring above and below the east and the west waters of the Arabian peninsula; escaping the hustle & bustle of this sprawling metropolis to the beaches, has led him to discover the quiet, yet thriving UAE surf culture.
One of Max’s other life-long passions is art, design and creativity. In more recent years, he explores this passion through the lens, which has only served to reinforce his drive to create and find inspiration in the world around us. Just going down to the water’s edge and watching the movement of the waves: the colours; shades; sounds and smells, provides Max with new inspiration to capture these details and create an image that evokes a sense or a feeling in the viewer and a relatability to that same escapism.
There are many, many, grand and breathtaking coastlines and breaks across the world, but Max believes that the search for waves among this concrete and steel playground has created a truly unique community, putting surfing in the Middle East on the map. By combining the passions of water and the creative inspiration that it gives him, Max intends to tell this story; capturing and celebrating the community that shares the small slice of stoke that Dubai and the surrounding coastlines have to offer.
It is, then, with immense pleasure that we present Layback Visuals; Max’s creative outlet for the inspiration the Dubai surf community gives him. Partnering with Surf House Dubai to open the Layback Studio print store, we intend to share the story of our local break ‘Sunnies,’ and the men, women and groms that call it home.
If you see him on the beach or in the water, please say hi! He appreciates it each and every time.

The tradition of the Sunset Open began in 2010. A surfing event held once a year with 3 reasons in mind:
The event has grown leaps and bounds in its national support, production and participation since 2010 (now 100+ competitors across all divisions), and we look forward to its inaugural hosting at the Umm Al Quwain Kite Beach Centre this year in 2022.
A bit of nostalgia below, showing the first ever permit to run the competition back in 2010.
